Eulalie Island is haunted, and it wants Addie. After nearly dying, a video that spread wildly across the internet, Addie is forced to tag along on her mother’s secluded island honeymoon. She spends as much time away from the house as possible. A chance encounter with a mysterious boy awakens the island. The flowers turn pink, a bird calls her name, and a ghostly little girl beckons her to play amongst the trees. As she explores, Addie stumbles onto the ghosts of two sisters, lost to the island almost two hundred years ago, separated by death. She is lured deeper into the island where she discovers its heartbeat. A heartbeat with deadly intent. Will Addie be able to save herself before the island devours her?
The haunted island, a character of its own, comes to life in this gothic horror. The main character, however, feels very one-note. Her character plateaus around the middle of the book and the rest of the story is carried by the danger and horror of the island itself. The climax is steep and the ending falls in place rather quickly. If Addie’s character had developed more evenly; it would have helped the pacing.
I recommend The Depths to readers that enjoyed The Poison Season by Mara Rutherford, Belladonna by Adalyn Grace and Cruel Illusions by Margie Fuston.
